Gilding Northeast Ohio: Fashion and Fortune 1870–1900 is on view June 08—October 13, 2024 in the Main Gallery.
Gilding Northeast Ohio is a unique exhibition highlighting what made Ohio sparkle so bright in the Gilded Age. This project will showcase fashion from the permanent collections of the Massillon Museum and the Western Reserve Historical Society and loans from various regional museums. The garments and objects in the show will tell the story of politicians, titans of industry, socialites, and the workers who helped gild Ohio. The Massillon Museum Main Gallery will be dramatically transformed to create an immersive experience.
Exciting exhibition features will include original costumes designed for the HBO series The Gilded Age.
The exhibition is guest-curated by Brian Centrone, who has long partnered with the Massillon Museum. Brian Centrone is a fashion historian specializing in late nineteenth-century British and American menswear, twentieth-century American menswear, queer fashion, pop culture fashion, and Barbie and Ken fashion and history. He co-curated the exhibition Gray Area: Authenticity, Value, and Subversion in Fashion at the 80 WSE Gallery, New York (2018) and guest curated the exhibition The Cunning Wrinkle of Newness: 19th Century Origins, Implications, and Adoptions of the Trouser Crease at the Harold L. Drimmer Library in Valhalla, New York (2022).
Funded in large part by a Major Arts Enhancements and Exhibitions Grant facilitated by ArtsinStark and Visit Canton, the project includes collaboration between dozens of regional partners to highlight the time period on which the exhibition focuses. Throughout the summer and into fall, programming in the form of concerts, performances, lectures, themed dinners, complementary exhibitions, and more will occur. A complete list of events will be published soon. The opening reception will take place on the afternoon of Sunday, June 9, and is free and open to the public.

Spring Hill Historic Home will reflect the Gilded Age through a look at the lives of Arvine Chaffee Wales, his wife Eliza, and their eldest child, Helen Wales Skinner. Step back in time to the charming splendor of Spring Hill Farm which will be set to resemble this Gilded Age-period of our history. Special first-person interpretive tours will feature artifacts, documents, and garments displayed throughout the home. Three special events will allow guests to expand their knowledge and enjoyment of Gilded Age hospitality with a Parlor Concert, a Food History Class, and a Suffragette Tea.
Gilded house tours are $10 for adults; $5 for students; and Free for children under 6.

Stroll historic Fourth Street for two hours with Margy Vogt to learn about Massillon's Gilded Age leaders and their homes, then step inside the Five Oaks mansion to see Tiffany decor and extravagant woodwork with Massillon Heritage Foundation between 3:00 and 5:00 p.m.

Adults and youths ages 15 and older are invited to join instructor Nick Lee for a Drawing from Life Workshop Series at the Massillon Museum on Saturday, June 29, from noon to 3:00 p.m., and Sunday, June 30, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Students will work in graphite, colored pencil, and art crayon to create works inspired by garments featured in Gilding Northeast Ohio: Fashion and Fortune 1870–1900. Students will draw mannequins wearing antique clothing from life on drawing paper. Students will be sent a supply list with items to bring or purchase prior to the first class date. The Museum will provide drawing paper and drawing clip boards to all students.
$50/member and $55/nonmember. Supplies to be purchased separately by each student total approximately $50. Students are able to provide supplies they already own. Dry media must be approved by the Museum for use in gallery.

Children in second grade or older are invited to join Ke'Aunte Harris as she leads an art and conversation workshop focused on building self-confidence! This workshop will connect with the themes of Gilding Northeast Ohio: Fashion and Fortune 1870–1900. Students will make printed shirts on cardstock using various art media.

Join the Massillon Museum on Saturday, August 3, for Do the Mu. Instructor Kat Francis will teach program participants how to make paper dolls in connection with Gilding Northeast Ohio: Fashion and Fortune 1870–1900. All ages and ability levels are welcome and all supplies will be provided. Guests can drop in anytime between 12:00 and 2:00 p.m.

Presented in collaboration with the Massillon Museum, this program will explore the social, cultural, and political attitudes toward the adoption of the men’s trousers crease in the late 19th century. In particular, Brian Centrone will discuss how President McKinley’s adoption of the style shifted fashion allegiance from the Prince of Wales to the US President, signaling America's rise as the new global superpower.

This experience starts, appropriately, in a mansion built during the Gilded Age. It is where William McKinley, our 25th President, and his wife, Ida Saxton, resided. Many elements of the family residence are still intact. Today it is preserved as the National First Ladies Library & Museum. From 6:00 p.m. to 6:40 p.m., tour two buildings and walk the grounds at your leisure. Exhibits will be set up in various areas. At 6:45 p.m., convene in the park garden, where you'll meet the staff and learn how this national treasure was saved and would become this one-of-a-kind organization. Museum staff will present a program connecting the Gilded Age our National First Ladies. A delicious dinner at historic Bender's Tavern will follow. The dinner will focus exclusively on the original menu from William McKinley's Inaugural Dinner. During dinner, you'll hear from guest speakers about Gilded Age themes associated with dining, etiquette, dress, menus, service, and more. For the Inaugural Dinner, our guest speakers will focus on William McKinley's presidential election and, specifically, the grand details of the Inaugural Ball, which took place in March 1897.

Join us for a Gilded Age tour of the historic Saxton-McKinley House, childhood home of First Lady Ida Saxton McKinley on October 3, 2024.
ONE NIGHT ONLY: View Ida's beautifully preserved inaugural ball gown, which will be on display at the home courtesy of the Ohio History Connection. You will also enjoy light refreshments at First Ladies Park at the First Ladies National Historic Site, as well as horse and carriage rides around south Market Avenue.

Fashion After Dark is presented by the Western Reserve Historical Society in Cleveland, Ohio. This exhibition simulates the atmosphere of an evening on Euclid Avenue with immersive lighting that simulates gaslight and early electricity. The Hay-McKinney Mansion (1911) is the only fully restored house of its kind open to the public in Cleveland. Within this exhibition, fashion and period rooms will work together to create a storybook atmosphere, transporting visitors back in time with scenes of dressing, dining, entertaining, and household service. In addition to luxurious interiors, the preserved servants’ spaces offer a look into working life “downstairs.”
